THE ESSENTIALS OF ME
The first art collaboration I did with prestigious international fashion and lifestyle magazine L’OFFICIEL NL of Les editions Jalou, was called ‘THE WIND OF CHANGE’.
Hues of red, white and blue and black in my signature lyrical style with fine line drawing formed the basis of this 3 x 3 METER , mural made in the studio. President Obama, the all time heroic president just took seat in the oval office and a this new energetic HOPE represented that big art piece. The wind of The Navajo People was blowing in the air. It served as the back drop for the cover, shot by ALIQUE , The cover model was EUGENIA VOLODINA dressed in the PRADA it- dress of that season, the stylist JOS VAN HEEL - Creative director was NICOLETTE GOLDSMANN - the editor-in -chief of L’OFFICIEL NL and L’OFFICIEL NL HOMMES, that supported me in my art vision in two editions of this directional title. The work was also featured in the inside editorial.
The second cover, art collaboration, was a big painting on paper 2,5 x 3 meter - fiery pinkish red energetic movement that represented ‘FREEDOM’. I covered the hands and under arms of the model, Dutch actrice HANNA VERBOOM in red paint and painted a bronze golde stripe from head to chest. This resulted in a living painting that oozed ROCK N ROLL CHIC and FREEDOM. The it- GUCCI black and white jacket was the geometrical focal point that fused effortlessly with the art. Her hands where laden in CARTIER and BOUCHERON diamond rings. PHILIPPE VOGELENZANG photographed, FERRY VAN DER NAT styled and CHIAO LI TSU was head of maquillage. NICOLLETTE GOLDSMANN directed this shoot and asked me for my art intervention and energy to create a dynamic symbiosis. This was exhibited in the RICHEMONT head quarters in Amsterdam.Part of the sales of this FREEDOM edition went to charity - GET IT DONE by Hanna Verboom and UBUNTU, empowerment through the arts of children that suffer trauma in warzones.

A tapistry of structures reminiscing of mosaic surfaces in Morocco. All walks of life in an art map.
Bagua Jody was part of RED LIGHT AIR - artist in residency - old Amsterdam brothels were used as art ateliers at the intersection of new city planning. The artist were the vehicles for change, like always. I created ‘SONGS OF ME’ there and presented the collection, in house and at ‘The Affordable Art Fair’ in Amsterdam, whilst being represented by ICONS ART GALLERY. These vivid lyrical paintings are the template of rock and roll anthems I wrote and used for multiple installations and collaborations. Raw and Iconic this time in the brothel was. A time of life performance and making monumental inner and outer landmarks. During this period the collaborations with photographer and artist BON JANE - Rachel Brennecke further developed.
SURREAL SEANCE - a fashion collection presentation and live art painting installation, presented during the opening of Amsterdam International Fashion Week - at legendary concept store SPRMRKT in Amsterdam. A TABLEAU VIVANT. The surrealist era, fin de siecle and roaring twenties became a big source of inspiration after living in Paris for a year. The salons, where a cocktail of aristocracy, artists and politicians came to indulge in conversation and creation in a decadent manner are a way of elevating life that BAGUA JODY embodies and redefines in his manner of living and bringing people together through his art and soul. Of course with a rock and roll, unique sensibility and taste.
After being fully clothed in my capsule collection ‘SURREAL SEANCE 1’ - the models undressed and became my canvas as did the grey walls. I intensely painted a new dimension, that became the concept for ‘SONGS OF ME’ - painting collection and it was the birth of multiple projects in various media. I was conveying my way of working from conceptual art towards applying this essence and narrative in different ways, in order to always safeguard the purity of every derivation.
Every piece I make that comes directly from the pure soul is a gateway to other journeys, filled with beautiful imperfections.
This project was supported by Amsterdam International Fashion Week, H20 COSMETICS, Chabrol Wines , Tony Jones Model Management and SPRMRKT+
A love affair with my twin artist and photographer - BON JANE. We met and felt instant synergy and collaborated on numerous projects. All investigating perception, image and truth. Both graduating from the conceptual Rietveld Academy meant delving in to the deep waters of insecurity and truth of what you want to convey as independent makers.
The juxtaposition of vulnerability and longing for connection and love accumalated in a explosion of projects, beautiful insecurities and statements. We lived as fashion for week in CHIELLERIE GALLERY during Amsterdam Fashion Week, creating, breathing and sleeping. People could live see us BE FASHION through live feed. We got covered in VICE magazine and more media and pushed the boundaries of what is real and what is not. We live skyped from Copenhagen and thanked the attendees live who were drinking champagne in our art hub and installation that consisted of photography and drawing and a bed. It was a critque on the fast and fleeting fashion world, pre online social platforms.
WE live performed for the after party of RYAN MCGINNLEY x AGNES B’s exhibition in FOAM, Amsterdam. We wore the iconic lacquer jet black trench coats and undressed while I wildly painted on our bodies. The epitomy of Rock and Roll and Parisian decadence. laying bare all inhibitions and liberating the media and attendees. Bravoure and well timed concoctions of life, desire and voyeurism. This was repeated for the opening party of the ANDY WARHOL exhibition in The Temporary Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
Currently we are working on a book about this epic and tempestuous time that formed us and enabled us to further fine tune various essences of work.
Bon Jane currently lives in New York and works as a succesful fashion Photographer and will always be my art twin.
For the four women Croatian Pop/Rock band LUMINIZE - I was asked to create the video clip for their hit song ‘TWILIGHT’. I created the concept, art, fashion and art direction to create this music x art collaboration. Bespoke art and hand painted kimono jackets with chiffon sashes by BAGUA JODY ATELIER and styling with fencing attire formed the basis of this epic musical art and fashion experience. I even performed in the piece as the dark samurai of creativity, whilst wearing one of my hand painted kimono’s whilst standing and sitting on an art piece whilst navigating through the shadows of doubt.
Ivan Barbosa directed my vision in studio Westerpark.
‘TWILIGHT’ describes the inner struggles we all have, not feeling at ease in your own body and not wanting to be vulnerable. In a monochrome twilight zone, dark demons and desire for alleviation are fence fighting for power. But in due course this despair and inner struggle will lead to creativity and victory. Vulnerability is where every woman can find the strength to go beyond not only darkness, but also herself.
